Giulio Cappellini’s tribute to Ostuni: a confluence of design, art, and history

Icone lamps – Luà and Lama – were the highlights of the pristine setting inside the Diocesan Museum of the small town in Puglia.

During the recent Design Weekend in Ostuni, one of the most anticipated events came to life in the picturesque Diocesan Museum, just steps away from the historic Cathedral. The exhibition, curated by Giulio Cappellini – art director at Icone, internationally renowned designer, entrepreneur, and Compasso d’Oro lifetime achievement award winner – celebrated contemporary design through a refined and monochromatic palette.

50 Shades of White

The exhibition titled 50 Shades of White showcased a meticulous selection of products, all rendered in white, chosen by Cappellini as a symbol of contemporary design. The choice of white was deliberate, reflecting the purity and essentiality that characterize modern style, creating a stark contrast with black, often associated with the same theme.

A stage for both Italian and international design

The exhibition included stellar contributions from renowned names in both Italian and international design spheres such as Agape, Alias Design, Alpi, Artemide, and many others. Each piece demonstrated the seamless fusion of innovation and tradition, illustrating how design transforms everyday objects into cultural symbols.

Icone Luce stood out by showcasing some of its most significant creations, including the floor lamps Luà and Lama, alongside other prestigious brands such as Kartell and Living Divani. This active participation highlighted Icone Luce’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of design and functionality.

More than just an exhibition

The event transcended the typical boundaries of a design exposition by becoming a pivotal gathering spot for professionals, enthusiasts, and critics alike, fostering spaces for interaction and networking. The displayed works sparked discussions and reflections on the role of design in contemporary society and its ability to influence daily perceptions and interactions.

Design meets history

Hosting the event at the Diocesan Museum added a layer of depth, connecting modern design with Ostuni’s rich historical tapestry. This blend of past and present made the experience even more memorable for attendees, underscoring how historical sites can serve as dynamic backdrops for contemporary creativity.

The Design Weekend in Ostuni was not only a showcase of talent and innovation but also an opportunity to reflect on the cultural dynamics that shape our world, paying homage to the timeless beauty of design.
