The architect of light takes care of it.

A
new appointment with Icone Talks to discover together with Giulio
Cappellini, architect, designer and art director of Icone, what the
profession of Lighting Designer consists of. To do this, we invited
Lisa Marchesi, who has been doing this job for twenty years.

Giulio
Cappellini. Can you explain what it means to be a lighting designer,
what does it mean to design light?

Lisa Marchesi. I like to explain my work with a sentence that I found in Vittorio Storaro’s book of many years ago, a sentence by Alessandro Manzoni, which says:

“The light rains on everything and various colors arouses wherever it rests”.

Because
basically light is life, it is part of our being. My job is to create
lighting for all architectural environments, fixed spaces or
temporary spaces. They can be from gigantic environments, such as
great architecture, or smaller spaces such as museums, homes and
exhibitions.

Lighting
designer is obviously a non-Italian term, in Italy we are often
called lighting designers, we are a bit of a little-known hybrid in
reality, because we take care of lighting things.

Everything that is related to the world of architecture and interior design in some way has to be showcased, it has to be emphasized, and the best way to do it is to have the correct lighting.

We lighting designers take care of the lighting design; there is a very technical part that is based on the technical aspect of light, but there is also a much more emotional aspect linked to the atmosphere that is created in the rooms, which is often a little underestimated.

Mine is just the classic design job, as an architect who deals with materials does my material is light, I use light to create atmospheres, to create sets.

Giulio Cappellini. This “design of the immaterial” is fantastic also because a beautiful interior, a beautiful architecture, if they are not illuminated in the right way, are useless. Beyond the atmosphere it can create, the right lighting is really fundamental because it gives you an always different perception of the same types of interiors, just as the right mix between natural light and artificial light is also fundamental, you need to find the right balance points. .

Also because, as I always say, the perception of light in Miami, where there is a very white light outside, and the perception of light in London, where the light is much more yellow, is completely different.

Lisa Marchesi. Contextualization is very important, it cannot ignore the analysis of the place.

Giulio
Cappellini. Can
you tell us about the different fields in which you work? Who is
calling you to customize their light? Do you work with companies and
individuals, in museums and so on?

Lisa
Marchesi.
I have been doing this job for almost twenty years now and in all
this time I have had the opportunity to work both for private
individuals and for the public administration. For the public we
mainly talk about cultural heritage, therefore about museums and
exhibitions, where obviously there is a sometimes very technical
approach because it is necessary. Light can be beautiful but it
hurts, if not used correctly it can lead to problems in the
conservation of works of art as well.

As for private
individuals, they can be both big brands – I work a lot in the retail
world, therefore with fashion and luxury design brands – and private
individuals who ask to design for offices, for private homes for also
very particular environments, such as houses with artistic
installations.

I happened to find myself in very different
situations, from the private person who maybe calls you to do the
lighting of the small apartment, to the two thousand square meter
house, and so also in the world of retail, where it ranges from small
shops to shops of over four thousand meters.

Giulio
Cappellini.
I remember that in the past in some clothing store to see the color
of a jacket or a sweater well you had to go outside. Beyond the
choice of interior furnishings, light plays a fundamental role in
retail.

Watch
the entire episode of Icone Talks with Giulio Cappellini and Lisa
Marchesi on the IGTV of the Instagram channel @icone.luce

Designing something immaterial?
